Second only to the Fistral beach in popularity, Croyde is the most famous surf spot in North Devon. It is capable of producing better and more demanding waves than Newquay's Fistral. Who are we to argue! Croyde is a privately owned beach (#!$?) but apart from that it is renowned for its low tide barrels with fast takeoffs and long rides. West facing it breaks both left and right with constantly changing sand banks. Holds well in large swells when there is an excellent wave known as Downend Point situated on the southern end of the beach. Easterly winds are offshore. Not suitable for beginners (only in small conditions, otherwise head for nearby Saunton). Watch out for strong rips on the northern end which run along the beach and will pull you onto the rocks.

B3231 from Braunton will take you to the Croyde village from where you can follow signs to the beach. Several car parks are available which carry charges.

  • High season: Lifeguards, surf school.
  • All year: Toilets, surf shops with surf hire, bars, pubs and restaurants.
