If you don't fancy standing, then why doesn't you (or someone else) perhaps at your suggestion, set up a residents forum to put forward the views of the locals?

This could involve possibly a residents meeting a couple of times a year and the odd attendance at the odd council meeting to put the views of the residents across. That way you could all get your views about the direction Newquay should take heard without becoming too involved.

Face it, if no one can be bothered, then nothing will change!

Ha ha, so you thought I was a bloke. Well Sazzle is just what my girlie friends nicknamed me. Sarah is real name! And yes I do have a lot of foresight for a gal!! But that’s because I did marketing at uni and work for marketing agency, I also know what works in towns and what doesn’t.

I think I have said it before but there are 2 sides to Ibiza: the very dodgy ‘Westend’ which is like every other resort (Gran Canaria, Magaluf, Kos, Faliraki, Newquay!) you know it has the tacky dark clubs that offer free shots and stag dos galore! Also you might see the odd slapper in a cowboy hat! (So last season!!!! He he!) Then there is the nicer part of Ibiza, the Sunset Strip. These are basically trendy bars with cool music, cool food and beautiful people, lots of glam and bling. Lots of famous people are spotted in these bars because none of the kiddiwinks can afford a fiver for a vodka cranberry! If Newquay had a few trendy swish bars (although that do not charge heaps more than pubs), which had mellow music then you might attract a different crowd. The council bigwigs should come visit the horrid Folkestone on the Kent Coast. It has dark tacky clubs and lots of undesirable people fighting as the pubs kick out….then just literally down the road there is a place called Sandgate with trendy bars on the seafront, decent music and young twenty somethings behaving. I’m not saying go for the ‘rah rah’ poshness that the crappy family on Holiday Showdown recently were like, I cannot stand all that but the nicer your bars are the nicer the people you will get who frequent them.

And like you say cinemas etc cost heaps but am I right in thinking that you have only 2 in Cornwall?? The young’uns (god I sound old but am only mid 20s – honest!!) need something else to do other than kick the telephone boxes in. But to be fair wherever you are in the country there are townies and trouble so its not isolated to Newquay in the summer…

The surf scene down there seems to be going well but a few more surf dedicated hotels springing up around the place and more facilities would be better. The fine butts and tanned bods will keep me visiting it. Even if I just sit from afar at the back of the beach with a pair of binoculars like some crazed stalker!!!!

But what do I know hey? I’m only a girl!!!!!!!!!

N wot do I kno....I'm only a Sad?Old Hippie

Yeah.....ur seriously wised up 4 a gurly Sarah n kno ur stuff...ur suggestions r good n make a lot of sense...I'd personaly go 4 ur idea of attractin t 'posher' element n seein as I dont use t bars/pubs etc wouldnt be bothered about extortionate prices they mite charge...selfish maybe but it gets rid of t yobs n that works 4 me

No....Newquay dont hold t flame 4 truble...as u say all places have it...its a sad fact of our age we live in...Newquay is generaly trouble n crime free tho...t main trouble cumin from visitors

Yeah....Newquay badly needs a cinema...Truro & St Austell have 1 n its unbeleavable we dont...plans r afoot 2 build a multiplex tho so wotch this space.....

So ur anuther 'fine buts n tanned bods' gurly r u.....seems like u n MJ cud ave a thing in common....n I thought it woz just us guys who perved t beaches wiv t binoculars.........Jeez..wimmin

Coming back to the surfing localism debate started by Tall thin bloke. I am from Cornwall originally and have recently moved to Sennen, where the surf is great in comparison to Newquay. Most of the locals are fine with one or two exceptions. There are local imports from up north and London, who think that, because they have lived in Cornwall for say 10 years it gives them the right to be militant local activists. This minority are scum. One of them even told me to 'go back to where I came from' recently. Where I came from is Cornwall and where the person in question came from is oppp north. These are the minority who are giving locals a bad name. People like the one who wrote the comment on this thread dated 29th June 2002 should be disowned by the genuine and friendly local dwellers.

I understand why locals allways guard secret spots. As in the summer they can get away from the over crowded beaches. But it is out of order if locals use violence against someone who stumbles across a secret spot.I have heard that it has even happened to Pro Surfers.

I was lucky, when i used to surf Newquay regularly, ten years ago and more.I slowly got accepted by the locals. So much so,they started putting me up for the week,to save me money on accomadation.

Oh dear!......

It's a crying shame that people sometimes view other people as "not from round ere" or "not local".crazy! do we not all pay taxes and have a vested interest in not just the town and country we live in,but the whole damn country!
speaking of personal experience,i prefer to come down in the "closed" season.reasons being obvious, not as busy.i don't do the tourist thing,i don't drink in the same old touristy pubs and bars, because i dont feel comfortable.but thats just my choice,i like to see the real places when i go anywhere, not the places that have been manufactured with the "emmets" in mind.
Last time i was down i made real cool friends, and yeah you always get banter between folks but at the end of the day we all live here, whether its 500 miles away or 500yds away!
It's a small world! and the idiots who resort to fisticuffs to try and bully others will get what comes around!grow up!noone owns the ocean,or the beach,so we just have to all get on!
ps.as for the so called "better"(technically not mentally!) surfers out there, show a little patience and respect for the groms!whether they are 13 or 30!!!!!! that was you once!
anyone for herbal tea?

I wish I could surf...

I am pretty new to this here forum but I am quite heartened with what I'm reading here...
There seems to be a general census of opinion here that we're all pretty friendly and tolerant of one another, as long as a genuine level of respect is displayed.
I have been going down to Newquay every Easter and Summer without fail for the last 10 years cos its just such a beautiful place to be. (I live in the west Midlands).
I have `dabbled' in the surf from time to time but I am still terrified of p****g off the profficient surfers...(although I have never ever had any problems with any surfer...local or non-local....how do ya tell anyway?).
I think maybe this "localism" thing is more a media generated phenomena, because I have just never witnessed any kind of hostility in the surf whilst there.
I have great respect (there's that word again), for all surfers, I just wish I was a damn sight better at it myself!!!!

In the 10 years I have been visiting I can't help feeling that the town center itself is becoming a more and more "no-go" area at night.
I'm 34 now, and perhaps getting a bit old for this night clubbing lark...so it doesn't bother me too much, but the centre itself just does not seem to be as "happy" and "friendly" as I remember it 10 years or so ago.
Its become a bit of "Stag Do Capital" of England in recent years and I think thats a bit of a shame.

I feel so sorry for the local population having to put up with the pathetic, loutish behaviour of the travelling dic*eads in the town at night, and am ashamed that as a "tourist" myself, that they may well tarr me with that same brush.

Lightbulb

Here, here,.

We had this debate last year, and it was even featured on Kilroy, one morning. The locals werent against the surfers, it was the kids, ruining the town itself that mattered . They would welcome surfers from all round the world, as long as the pi$$heads would stay in Ibiza.

Such a shame. This will be my 9th summer in The Key, and I know what I've got to look forward too. I have also noticed it getting worse over the years, but the council seem to be at a loss to do anything about it.

Let the surfers take charge......maybe....

Well,

This is a bloody long thread and having just read it for the first time I have missed chunks to stop me going to sleep so if I miss a point or repeat something sorry !!!

Emmits are ants - you bloody so called locals who call tourists this should realise that for centries their known as groccles !!! Emmits are ants ... jesus !!!

Its not just Newquay gettin worse, its the whole bloody country. Respect is gettin less, parents are bringing up their children worse & without the correct morales and the goverment are giving those with the authority a harder time to do their jobs properly. Most tourist crime is committed by those who come from the inner towns & cities and give their local Police a headache anyway.

As for ' Surf Rage ' as it could be branded, as Hippy and others said, its the ocean, its not ours, it belongs to nature and its free for all !!! Locals, if ya get pissed off like I use to when the ' GROCCLES ' are here, then go early morning or late evening. Early morning there either asleep / hangover or in the early evening are getting ready to go out to act like a twat / pissed / gettin laid or all three !!!

Locals have their secret spots too as previously mentioned so why worry about the main breaks till they get quieter? Most secret spots are better anyway than the main breaks ! Well mine is

If people had respect then in all walks of life there wouldn't be half the problems that there are, but if someone cuts you up on the road, or drops in on your caught wave why risk a confrontation or escilation ? What goes around comes around . . .

The major problem with Cornwall is that is is so reliant on income generated from Tourism, I think we are all aware that Tourism has many positive aspects as well as negative.....I myself love Cornwall and have lived here all my life - truly born and (in)bred LOL!

I feel the most annoying thing is the council - too many egos and too little strategy and action, but really is anyone surprised? Local councillors are usually local business owner and their motivations and goals will be related to the benefits of their businesses and not necessarily what is right or best for Newquay and it's residents who pay council tax etc....

Personally I hate the pissed up idiots who decend here, but we are visited by many decent people aswell who respect and love our environment as much as well the local yokels do. There is nothing worse than seeing a fight/ person puking in the street/ general aggro in a place you love and feeling like a prisoner in your own town. Something I feel many locals can relate to! I would never visit another town and act like a complete idiot. Just look at Torqauy - it's as they say 'bang ontop' there and full of aggro on a night out - is this where Newquay is heading? A worse reputation than Torquay?

So anyway - I just treat others as I would like to be treated.......

As for the Tall Thin Duke - Alfred the Great burnt his cakes - males can not multi task sweetie, us women can - and that includes kicking your ass!!!!!! I am sure you are a ***** really who is of course v bored!
