THAT EVENING IN THE PUB, I ATTEMPTED TO SMILE TO MYSELF THROUGH SWOLLEN , FAT LIPS AND ATTEMPTED A RUEFUL WINK THROUGH MY RAPIDLY SWELLING LEFT EYE TO THE TOTTIE BEHIND THE BAR. SHE GAVE ME THE FINGER ....AND THIS IDEA FORMED IN MY MIND . SHE THOUGHT I WAS AN ARROGANT LOCAL!JUST LIKE THOSE ROUGH LADS EARLIER....NOW HAD IT BEEN OBVIOUS FROM THE START THAT I AM INDEED AN AFFLUENT TOURIST BRINGING MUCH NEEDED REVENUE TO THE AREA THEY WOULD HAVE WELCOMED ME WITH OPEN ARMS....NOT CLENCHED FISTS(AND EXTENDED FINGER) .MY IDEA IS SIMPLE IT IS .................ALL LOCALS WHERE AN ORANGE(MAYBE GREEN) VEST OR BIB ,TOURISTS DONT AND WE ALL KNOW WHERE OUR PLACE IN SOCIETY IS !

Unfortunately I cannot comment on the behaviour of local surfers in Newquay but as a Local born and bred in Newquay I would like to iron out a few points from a local perspective.

The population of Newquay is around 26,000. This is fine through the wintermonths as the town is designed to cater for this, but in the summer months june-Sept, the population swells to an average 125,000 per week. During this time you will find that 90% of the locals actually avoid the beaches and town centre and are therefore prisoners in their own town. On the surf front, the locals spend the winter surfing in temperatures that would freeze brass monkeys bits and then summer 125,000 people decide they want to surf, and claim the beachfront.
There is appreciation for visitors to the town and it is much needed revenue, but please spare a thought for the locals. I think the easiest way to put the situation into perspective is to imagine an extra 100,000 people visiting your neighbourhood for 3 months in summer, changing faces every week. Thats an extra 100K people in your Tesco's , Petrol Stations, Pubs & Clubs.

I AM SURE THAT VISITORS TO NEWQUAY LIKE MYSELF DO APPRECIATE THE (LETS BE HONEST HERE ) LOCAL TOLERANCE OF THE SUMMER "TATTOO " AND "KISS ME QUICK BRIGADE" . THE REVENUE IS OF COURSE THE ONLY REASON THAT "TRIPPERS" ARE ENCOURAGED TO RETURN AGAIN AND AGAIN TO FREQUENT VENUES LIKE THE ATROCIOUS "SPRINGBOK BAR" FULL OF DOORMEN AND ROUGH BOYS WHO ARE NOT SATISFIED UNTIL THEY'VE BOUGHT A "RIP-CURL"T-SHIRT AND GOT THOROUGHLY PISSED ! (THEY ARE VERY NOISY)

HOWEVER , THE PERCENTAGE OF TRIPPERS WHO ACTUALLY ATTEMPT TO SURF THE MORNING GLASS IS VERY SMALL . IT , AS YOU KNOW IS A COMMON SIGHT ALONG SAY....... WATERGATE BAY TO SEE A GROUP OF UP TO 35-40 PEOPLE ENGAGED IN A SURF SCHOOL FOR A MORNING OR POSSIBLY FOR SOME OF THEM.. A DAY . ALONG EVERY BEACH , IF THE SURF'S UP FOR IT , THEN SO WILL A LARGE MOB OF NEWBIES , ALL CAVORTING LIKES SO MANY DANCING FOOLS IN THE ...MUSH/OUT FRONT NOT IN THE WAY OF THE SELECT FEW GUYS WHO CAN ACTUALLY RIDE THE WAVES . WHAT IM TRYING TO SAY IS THAT FOR A FEW MONTHS OF THE YEAR GROUPS OF WANNABES ARE HAVING A GOOD TIME IN THE WARM WATER , WHEN THE SURF IS LETS FACE IT NOT AT ITS BEST. VERY FEW IF ANY EVER GET OUTBACK AND THEREFORE DO NOT INTERFERE WITH THE LOCAL SURF HEROES . YOU HAVE A POTENTIALLY MUCH BIGGER FIGHT ON YOUR HANDS WITH RESTORMEL COUNCIL AND THE COMMERCIALISATION OF YOUR BEACHES !
SO ALTHOUGH I SORT OF SYMPATHISE , NOT TO MUCH MIND , WELL HARDLY AT ALL REALLY(UNLESS YOUR A STUNNING SORT OF CHICK IE:NOT A MOOSE!) SPARE A THOUGHT FOR ALL US DIE HARDS THAT ARE POSITIVELY LOOKING FORWARD TO THE END OF OCTOBER.NOVEMBER ETC WHEN WE CAN STRIP NAKED AND CHANGE IN MINUS TEMPERATURES IN WINDY/WET CARPARKS THEN LOOK FORWARD TO TAKING OF THE WETSUIT IN THE B&B'S SHOWER AFTER YOU'VE SMUGGLED YOURSELF IN UNSEEN AND SPENDING TWENTY MINUTES SHOWERING ALL THE GRAINS OF SAND DOWN THE PLUG HOLE ..THEN FINDING ANOTHER LARGE PILE OF IT HAS SOMEHOW APPEARED IN THE OTHER CORNER OF THE CUBICLE .
I SUGGEST SOME SORT OF LARGE COMMUNAL WALLED AREA CONTAINING THE MOTHER OF ALL BLOW HEATERS AND WALL TO WALL HOT SHOWERS , POWERFUL ENOUGH TO REALLY GET ALL THE SAND OUT FOR THE SLEEVES AND CRUTCH OF YOUR WETSUIT .THAT MY OLD MATE ( OR FORGIVE ME IF YOU ARE A HOT BABE ) , MY HONEYPIE .........IS THAT .

i live in a city that is contantly visited by tourist all year round, but we all have to get on. i was dishartne when i saw the poll and the pieces of litreature that followed.

b4 i start i better make it clear that i love surfing and newquay. and i am female. contrary to your artical, i surf all year round and as i live 500 miles from newquay, it means i surf in the north sea!!! where ever i am i always take care and i dont interfer with the locals around me, but please remember that not all surfers have the luck to live by the sea. to suggest that visitors and loacals should have seperate days is stupid as is to lump visiting surf hunters with those down for a weekend piss up and the glory for saying, "i surf".

so please in future remember that we can all live togethor.

Hi all,
I'm from the north west of England and I come to Newquay every summer for the surf. Unfortunatly other 'tourists' come for other reasons. They seem to be people that can't afford to go to ibiza. THis summer when we came down, one of my mates got badly beaton up, but not by locals.
The locals rock, but the 'others' need to locked up.

As a beginner surfer, I have not yet experienced any hostility from anyone on the beach. I have had some interesting experiences with local Women down in the 'Deep west' of the country. I have found them to be most friendly and don't have a bad word to say about them
I believe the locals call me an 'Emmet' which is basically a term for people from who aren't from Cornwall. I have talked to locals down there and have even made a few friends who I drink with whenever I see.
I have never been challenged to a fight and on the odd drunken occasion I have fallen into people who have never tried to hit me.

Mind you, I am usually a skin head and over six foo tall with a few years Matial arts and Boxing experience behind me

I dont agree with what your saying at all, big tall slim dudey guy. i am a born and bred cornish lass have always lived here, and your trying to make locals wear them things?! no way, locals prob dont like you or many emmits because you come down and try and take over everywhere! all you with your townie clothes and all that shit. i know most tourists are nice and so i am not having a go at or stereotyping all tourists, but the way your behaving and your attitude?! no wonder people down here act the way they do towards you.

Branding Locals is as bad as us branding emmets!
If emmets would leave their "are you staring at me pal?" attitude at home, you wouldnt get some locals being stupid and kicking off in the first place.
It does get to me when you see folks with the "i pay all your wages" attutude, prancing round newquay like they own it! GRR!
