Just thought I'd throw in the latest from Mt. Maunganui.

It seems their reef has never been completed due to lack of funding and alleged construction problems. Many local surfers are now allegedly calling for its removal because of allegedly poor quality waves and allegedly dangerous rips. Whether or not these alleged conditions are the result of the reef being left incomplete or the result of a wider design problem who knows.

However, its looking more and more as if Bournemouth is going to be the real test bed for the reef design. Fingers crossed on that one.

At least if it doesn't work, it triggered an entire regeneration of the area anyway.

Bournemouth reef construction has been abandoned for the winter (until April) as there's too much swell. As for the speed of the work thats occurred, I believe the official explanation is the bad weather this summer.

Case of wait and see. New estimated completion date is September 2009 according to the site I visited.
