Personally, I'm currently crap at surfing.
I've decided to hide away to a less busy beach until I'm less embarassed about my surfing. It's not the falling off that I find embarassing. It's the occasional huge stringy bit off snot that hangs off of my nose as I come up gasping for breath.
I think that if I was a good surfer, I would be a bit peed off if the beginners such as myself got in the way, only to try and stand up and wipeout straight away. It would be a waste of a good wave.
If you're a reasonable surfer then you should have the right to use the Reef as it is supposed to be used.

I think the reef would be a good idea, providing people respect it for what it is. If you can't drive a car then there's no point in borrowing a Ferrari.

It's best to learn in something like this Micra. It may be small and slow but Damn those flames look good.

shame on you clifff - what's wrong with cheating and watching all the really good guys, learning a few moves and getting some reflected glory??
the snot thing happens to everyone, (especially me) but it's my brother that has the problem - he has been known to leave the beach and have half a pint of salt water drop from his nose sometime after (with potentially embarrasing consequences!).
i too am still pretty much a novice, but i love this sport and intend to practice it, reef or no reef, show-off in the way or not. etc....
one day we will be the ones to rule the waves <add over the top villianous laugh as required>.

ok folks, in case anyone hasn't read my comments about new years newquay, i hereby, totally take back my earlier thoughts....

who cares if the beach gets busy. it would have been nice to get out on a wave over the break - real wave or man-made, i didn't care since it was that flat. it's a real downer when you don't have your own board yet, spend all your hard-earned on hiring one, and don't manage to get out there.

hey ttb, that looks like one pretty mean mother of a wave you caught there. still, in time, i'm sure i'll be posting a pic of myself looking cool as well!!!

25ft?!? are you insane? don't know about you, but that would scare me into a new pair of shorts!
at the moment, i have trouble handling 25 inches (although my young lady isn't complaining!!)

as for near death experiences, the nearest i've got so far was seeing a crash on the M1 the other week on my way home from newquay. does that count??

Red face NEAR DEATH

DEAR JAB
IT ONLY COUNTS IF YOU WERE SCORCHING THE TARMAC AT 100MPH AND THEN INSTANTANEOUSLY "RUBBER NECKING" AT 15 MPH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
APOLOGIES FOR PHOTO QUALITY.I SET THE CAMERA TO AUTO-TIMER AND THEN HAD TO "LAUNCH" IT SKYWARD ,NOTE THE "RED LIGHT "BLINK ONCE , CROUCH AND CATCH THE CAMERA BEFORE THE WAVE CLOSED OUT!
HEHE I CASUALLY TOOK THE CHANCE THAT THE FOCUS MAY HAVE BEEN A TAD OUT ALONG WITH THE EXPOSURE!

100mph?? that's very irresponsible. it's also an instant ban, so i never go faster than 99!!!
also, the unfortunate incident was infront of us, so we didn't even manage to cover the 15miles approaching it in an hour!!!!
(apologies to any traffic fuzz reading - i do drive responsibly, honest!)

yours in safety,
marc bolan.

(stay cool,
Ian.)

i think apologies are due to any bolan fans, owners of yellow minis (with or without added tree decoration) and ROSPA nuts.

i would also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that driving like a lunatic isn't big or clever - it's also not fair on those of us who want to buy a VW and know we'll never reach more than 30mph going downhill with a nasty tailwind!!!

I think it 'll b gr8 for newquay and even if it does get taken over by "aggressive locals" that'll mean more waves for every1 else at the rest of the beaches in the area. I think it'll help british surfing as the brit rippers will get some consistently good waves to hone their skills and hopefully we'll see a few more brits on the WCT. Maybe it'll b good enough for a higer rated WQS event, I think Newquay deserves more than the 4-star WQS it's got now.

Thumbs up I AGREE!

DEAR BIGBEN(SNIGGER)
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU ON THIS ONE. UPGRADING THE TOURNAMENT STATUS WOULD NOT ONLY SERVE TO INCREASE THE LOCAL ECONOMY BUT ALSO ATTRACT A FRESH LOAD OF "TALENT " WHO HAVE'NT BEEN "EXPOSED " TO.....I MEAN WHO HAVE 'NT BEEN SUBJECTED TO ....ERM ..(COUGH) ,,WHO HAVE NOT BEEN PULLED BY ME BEFORE !
THAT IN ITSELF IS ALL THE REASON ANYBODY NEEDS IF THEY SEE THEMSELVES AS COMMUNITY MINDED CITIZENS.AS OF COURSE BEING PULLED BY ME IS JUST ONE MORE NATRUAL ATTRACTION THAT CORNWALL IN GENERAL HAS TO OFFER!!!!!!!!!

TARA AND JUST KEEP PRAYING EVERY EVENING TO YOUR GOD WHICH EVER ONE OR ONES IT/THEY MIGHT BE THAT YOU WILL WAKE ONE MORNING TO FIND ME ASLEEP BY YOUR SIDE .(THIS APPLIES TO CHICKS ONLY MIND...........NO "WILL YOUNG" WANNABES

Thumbs up Reef

I agree totally. Newquay should have a reef where the more experienced surfers can get their fill of quality waves. I surfed on the artificial reef at surfers paradise (Australia) The standard of the wave was far higher than those found on the beach break, But i guess you have Kirra and Burliegh down the road so your spoilt for choice anyway ! I think Newquay would benefit greatly from the construction of a reef. Maybe then we could say that newquay is a world class surfing destination. cuz lets face facts it can't really compare to tavarua or other exotic locations, so i think a reef would give the whole town a bit of a boost, Plus some of the dickhead lager tourists in the summer may get them selves all fu**ed up on it which of course lends an execllent comedy factor to the whole thing !

Exclamation Surfdog the less able reefrider

Dipwits like you 'Surfdog' forget that the mere makeup of a reef is to have a formed breaking wave. This would entail riding with good control and experience across the face of a left or right breaking wave, perhaps executing a controlled manoeuvre avoiding other boardriders.
ATTENTION ALL WUCKFITS - If you cannot do the above then move to the sides away from the main peak at all breaks in the surfing world! Enjoy your learning curve, I did, in a far more cut throat Southern Hemisphere and it did not mean I begrudged experience that will be afforded you, the temporary Wilbur Kookmeyer, in time.
