tall thin bloke, you have some probs.
reef = amazing surf in winter i believe, its been in the pipeline for years now.
i think it'd be kewl, but the proposed area is a important decision. and its not like the whole bay is a affected, i think the latest idea are the cliffs around tolcarne or great western, but dont quote me

An artificial reef is a great idea.!!!!! They actually have one off Harvey Bay in Australia which is only kilometers from the real thing and environmentally it's caused no problems at all!!!

Surfing isn't just a pasttime bro, it's a way of life!!!!
As that ol' saying goes, "My girlfriend told me that if I went surfing she would leave me. Geez, I miss her!"
Being from Durban, South Africa, where the weather and the water is warm, I just want to say that I take my hat off to all you surfers in the UK. You guys have balls and show unbelievable commitment to this great sport for surfing in cold, not so consistent, conditions all year round. Us foreigners can definately learn a lot from you dudes about the true meaning of "Surfing Zen!" I'm embarassed to say that I took surfing for granted back home but it's true and I've only come to realise that since living here in the UK. Surf every day as if it was your last, no matter what the conditions are like, 'cause it could be your last.
See you all in the water!
Surf 'til ya drop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

Sorry tall thin bloke, maybe that was a bit harsh but why would some idiot like you from london start boasting about how grest you are at surfing, when you've probably never seen a decent wave in your life?!
The newquay reef is a very bad idea. check out the narrowneck reef; complete failure. a reef at newquay would be an environmental disaster. sorry to be all doom and gloom, but its the truth.
laters.

Look out every one i've got a live one here!!!
Dear Dave
Hi.....it's been a long time since i posted on this site . A great site i think you will agree . Now i suggest that you take a good thorough look through all the post's that i have left . Work it out for your self and post another "barn-stormingly" "right-on " reply .....Heheheheh .
As it happens i do surf , i am pretty good and i do know what a real wave looks like i just don't take surfing or the shitty macho attitude it sometimes generates very seriously ...unlike some people Dave.....who bite at the first dangle of a juicy fat old literary worm!!
Now i've enjoyed this blast from the "wind - up past" and i'm now left pondering ....will you answer? will you be abusive again?or will you read and have a laugh at the whole shooting match that is surfing as i only know two other past times that enable me to completely shut down from everyday life , women and Quake 3 Arena ..oh and women ....did i mention that i'm a " love god/you can trust me i'm a Doctor baby!!" kinda guy?
No? well i just have .
Take it easy Dave or can i call you 30000? oh and have a laugh on me
Cya

Well i think it is a great idea,if it will stop those flat days that allways seems to happen in the summer months.I wonder what the waves will be like in winter, with an artifical reef?.

Have a look here for the other side of the coin: -
Some Newquay Reef Worries...
I think if it does go ahead, it should be out of newquay (Penhale or up the beach from Watergate maybe?), create 'new' waves and attract tourism away from Newquay centre (increase capacity), not ruin the natural waves that allready exist.

Rip currents
Take a look at this link: -
Rip Currents: What They Are and How To Survive Them
Basically waves/wind push water up the beach, that water has to go somewhere, so flows back out to sea by the path of least resistance (a deeper channel).
(I've been on Crantock when the rip was running 'up' the river!)

Re: Rips
No problem,
Rip's aren't a real problem, it's panic/exhaustion and cold that are the killers.
Once you've got experience, rip's can be a surfer's friend!
