Reef Update Posted
As I understand it, far from being scrapped, following a successful environmental study, the reef project is now out for public consultation. All locals no doubt will be aware of this.
So far as the negative comments on the site go, think about this:
I understand Newquay TC are committed to increasing the number of tourists in Newquay. This means one of two things, more drunken dickheads who disrespect the town and its residents or more surfers.
Or to put it another way, the more surfers there are filling the hotels, the less rooms there are for the dickheads.
Building a reef may attract more surfers but this is better than the alternative. At least surfers respect the town and its people.
Locals will know where to go when the reef gets too crowded in summer anyway.
So far as artificial reefs not working, it is true that some have failed to live up to their potential although arguably at most there has at least been some improvement over the pre-reef conditions.
However, ASR's reef at Narrowneck has been a resounding success.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the surfers of Newquay to get a world class wave such as the one at Narrowneck, and a once in a lifetime opportunity to provide an alternative to drunken tourism. Newquay should seize this opportunity even if the only reason for doing so is to keep the drunken louts out.

Here, here...well said Alsone (odd name that!)
Couldn't agree more. The reef can't hurt the town, and maybe even if it didn't fulfil all its obligations, it wouldn't hurt to try. The TC would probably look at it as a white elephant, but they'd just have to put it down to experience. If it only helps to clear the town of the stupid immature little g!ts, it would be worth every penny!
What I want to know is, where will the good waves roll to shore. Will it effect all the beaches in the bay, or just a couple. Short or wide ranging effects?
