I wonder if it is something to do with the following:
Quote:
Extreme Academy team surfers Chris Thomson and Jane Birch will be hoping to beat some of the world’s best longboarders in the Nine Plus Midsummer Classic longboard competition at Watergate Bay this weekend (19th & 20th June 2004).
Four of the world’s top 44 longboarders are British and all four will be hitting the waves at Watergate in the event, which is the second of three British Longboard Union (BLU) contests this year.
With a win in the first competition earlier this year, world no.20 Elliot Dudley (Llantwit Major) could take the 2004 BLU Open title at Watergate Bay with another win here. Out to stop him will be the defending BLU champion and world no.21 Lee Ryan – as will world no.38 Ben Skinner (Newquay) and world no.34 Sam Bleakley (Sennen).
Thomson, meanwhile, will be looking to claim the scalps of some of the top-ranked surfers and go one step further than his career-best semi-final placing in a BLU event.
“I had a bit of a shaky start to the year in the first BLU contest at Easter – the surf was really small and my surfing is much more suited to bigger waves,” said Chris. “Now we’re at my home break I’m really hoping we’ll get some good surf. There are some incredible surfers in this contest and hopefully it will be a really good event for me.”
In the Ladies division Extreme Academy team rider Jane Birch will be hoping to improve on her recent fourth place at the Red Stripe British Longboard Championships last month. Jane will face stiff competition from current British Champion Dominique Munroe (St Agnes), and Emma Fitzhenry is also expected to do well.
In the Masters division Eric Davies will once again be the man to beat. Davies has totally dominated the over-40s division in recent years, winning the overall BLU Masters title for the last three years. However, long-term rival Tim Mellors will be unlikely to make sure Davies gets it all his own way in this surprisingly competitive division.
At the other end of the age spectrum, the Junior (under 18) division features a packed field of talented youngsters. Names to watch include Tom Fisher and the prodigal Joe Davies (Jersey).
This is the third year that Watergate Bay has hosted the Nine Plus Midsummer Classic, a popular event which has become a must-see fixture on the British longboarding calendar.
“Watergate Bay is a great venue, and the Extreme Academy is really well set up for running top-quality surfing events,” said BLU founder and contest director Minnow Green. “Nine Plus have a good relationship with the Extreme Academy, and the Midsummer Classic is always a good event.”
Competition begins on Saturday 19th June with the finals culminating on Sunday afternoon. On Saturday evening the Nine Plus party gets going from 7pm at the Beach Hut Bar, Watergate Bay. Entry is £5 on the door and includes a barbeque dinner.

I often check the watergate webcam to see what the surf is like and see what going on as im so far away. I just thought it was strange seeing boats on the beach and loads of people seamed to be looking at them.
cant wait to get back down there this summer.
