Hehe, me too (6ft in Corwall), even tho I go to Hawaii once/twice every year and have pleasure in watching others take on Waimea, Pipeline etc. Reason for not going in: not very good surfer, so not in any mood to make fool out of myself in such a competitive environment.

I've been lucky had double overhead on Fistral in July 2001.

Not bad for a beginner.

Guess I'm like Ivan though, not very good - I just don't get enough practice as only at the sea for a week every year.

know how you feel mate, would love to go big wave surfing one day but at mo i wouldnt be confident enough in front of the watermen on the north shore etc or in my own ability.Besides,i havent enough experience to tackle the big surf and always want to make sure i can get out of trouble as quick as i get into it.One day though................

I always surf with the BSA or if I hire a board right in front of them!

I know most of the guys pretty well now after 5 years worth of lessons so my strategy is follow them and their instructions - even if not a part of their group - I know they'll keep an eye on me.

If they deem an areas safe it usually is, no matter how big the surf.

The biggest (and most frightening thing) about large surf though is the undertow / rips. When I was in Fistral and it was 12-15ft in 2001 I could barely stand up, in thigh high water my body was at 45 degrees to the surf as I leant over to resist the pull and even then my feet were being sucked along the sand in small jumps as if i was holding a large dog on a leash that I couldn't resist. Thats how strong it was and I'm 6ft and 14 1/2 stone!

Al.

scary stuff al,shows why the sea demands so much respect.Got to say that my regular spot is actually on the east coast with no where near as many surfers as newquay so it has actually made me that extra bit cautious knowing there are less people around, i like to know that if the case arose i could get myself outta trouble.Cant wait to get back to newquay but work demands etc etc.......kw

Biggest I've had is at the Watersplash at St. Ouens in Jersey. Just about overhead. Waves break pretty close to shore so you get an awesome sense of speed, especially on a bodyboard as Mojo said!

Anyone else surfed Jersey? Fantastic in the winter months at low tide, if a little bleak!!

Isle of Wight

Overhead + ! This was at steephill cove I.o.W!

The Island is way overlooked, and there are spots where you can be alone, every set to yourself, or just a few people with you.

Some spots are quite rocky/dangerous but hey, you've got to go for it!

!Lets get a round of applause for the Islo o' Wight!
