My favourite learning beach in Newquay was Fistral as it is usually packed with novice surfers, so I never felt out of place. Once I got better I fancied quiter spot, so Perranporth and Watergate beaches served me well but for these you need your own transport. Town beaches can be very good when Fistral is too big or windy.

If you're looking for white water to play in while you learn, then Fistral is good, but I suggest going early as in the day it gets heaving. 8am - 9am is usually a great time to get out as the tide is usually dropping.

Alternatively I've always liked Lusty Glaze...

Kat, You've gotta be kidding me here. I mean, surely you jest!

".....gets heaving. 8am - 9am is usually a great time to get out as the tide is usually dropping."

Did you really write that or was it a slip of the keyboard because i know that anyone who has more than a few days at the beach is aware that the high/low tide times change everyday. What are you trying to do? Put the guys who make and sell our tide timetable out of a job? Leave them alone! They have families to support!

And now for you Ripcurlgirl4eva. No i'm not so much of an old git really. If you want a good beach to learn to surf then choose any that have a good surf school. I know some of the guys at Fistral and they are a good bunch. Use them a couple of times till you get the general idea and then go it alone. Use this coming summer to use the beaches which are guarded and use the black n checked flags.

Once you get the hang of it which is the best beach to surf? Well that will be the one without a lineup full of idiots who call themselves locals. To all of you out there,...... just because you have been in town for a few weeks/months doesn't mean you're a local. Then again, if you all keep to fighting it out at Fistral it leaves the real local guys to score good, uncrowded waves in hassle free conditions else where!!

Well Ripcurlgirl4eva. I hope that helps you out. Sorry about the last bit but, .....well,..... i have to live up to my name

It was a vague generality :P And I meant that currently it was

But I must admit I wasn't really paying attention - too many things at once going on, so you got me

How'd you get to be a Chief Executive Officer?? Being a Junior Member makes me feel like i'm heading into my second childhood!! Oh, and do you get much surf in the Midlands

Many years training my ar#e. You only registered this month, same as me. Anyway you should respect your elders. Hmmmm, how old are you by the way? I might be getting into a hole here.

Anyway, its not too far to the East coast for you though. There are some good waves there or do you save it for when you come down to good old Costa del Newquay?

I don't know. You forget what the tide does, and you forget your password. You'll be getting shipped off to a home soon.

Any more whippersnappering from you and i'll, i'll.......well i'll do something when i learn to use my zimmer frame one handed.

Where do you surf when you come down to Cornwall? You don't get caught up in all that Fistral rubbish do you?

Ah well i best be off. I can't sit here any more talking shite. I have to get home (i work away) so that i can enjoy 6 weeks off with sod all else to do but surf and dive. Aahhhhh blissto. Its a tough life

See ya in the water

Sod

Actually I like Fistral mainly for convenience - I usually stay at the boarding house and its a minutes walk first thing in the morning. I'm not a big crowd surfer - being in the mids I don't get out as much as I'd like, and you know what happens when you spen a couple of months away from the board - I like my space.

To be honest though, I've not tried many of the others although I have a friend who's desperate to take us on a tour of the best cornish surf so who knows
