Actually its not as its been proved that the South West has its own little eco system going on

Not that I'm sure on boundries or the technical side but generally winter temperatures are not as bad as the rest of the UK & summer can be warmer hence why they say places TORQUAY are the English Riviera.
For one thing in all my years I've never listened to the weathermen for the BBC or other media stations as they couldn't organise a piss up in Skinners

Summer can be far warmer than they advertise but often feel cooler due to off shore winds etc. Don't foget KERNOW has more coastline than any other county in England, Wales or Scotland (good to know for pub quiz's) and is surrounded on three sides by water.
If weather is crap on the north coast I've often found it to be better on the south. If the weather inland is bad then it can be glorious on the coast as examples !!! Last year June, July & August was very hot & I only found it bearable whilst on the coast with the old sea breeze than being inland. Oviously not every day was glorious as we had some real bad thunderstorms in June, but on a whole it was in the mid to late twenties and quite a few days if memory serves topped 100 degree's on local thermometers despite what the media said.
BUT ... just to throw in I remember the really bad summers that we've had too
