What kind of VW Van for Morocco surf trip?

I am flying into the U.K from the U.S on Sept. 23 to look for a VW camper van to live in while I surf the coasts of France, Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. I am a veteran of surf trips but COMPLETE newbie in the world of VW campers.

I totally recognize that my brothers and sisters in Europe are the experts in this kind of trip, hence my post in a UK forum. I know that many of you have already done this trip like many of us have done Mexico.

Please advise as to the best kind of VW camper model, year for this kind of trip. Advice on what to avoid would also be greatly appreciated.

You can send me a private message and I would even be happy to call you from the U.S. Anyone who has done this trip with some sage advise will be rewarded with surf karma for years to come.

Your brother from across the pond,

Aaron

Well, whilst I am no expert, I think the obvious thing to point out is that due to their age, you really need to find one which has been very well looked after or well restored as they can be unreliable and the last thing you would want is for one which isn't going to complete the trip. This will also mean you are going to be paying more, as many people will buy one which isn't in great condition at a low price and restore it themselves, but it doesn't sound like your in the situation to do this!! People have done so much work on this things, like making newer models look like the retro ones, that as your not a collector or having it as a hobby, I wouldn't worry too much about models and such. Just have a look on ebay and auto trader, which is where you'll find loads advertised, this will show you whats available, just use google to read up on them a bit, theres sure to be hundreads of forums out there and then you can get the van most suited to you for the right price. The links are http://www.autotrader.co.uk/ and www.ebay.co.uk. I hope that helps even if it isn't very specific, but like I said i'm no expert.

This done the job for these guys, just thought I'd post it up here as an example for you and maybe the seller wouldn't mind you contacting him if you needed some questions answered about your trip.

What kind of reliability should I expect from a van purchased for under 3000-4000 pounds? Should I just bite the bullet and fork over some serious cash and get something for 8000 pounds or so. Is it necessary?

You want a T4 mate, far more reliable than the air coolers and easier to drive. Don't get me wrong, I love my splitty and I'd love to go see some mates in France in it, just ain't sure it'll make it, lol.
