Mundaka Report
So back from Mundaka and what a fantastic time I had, just wish I could have stayed for the week so I could have watched the final but maybe next time.
We flew form Stansted to Bilbao and then took an hour bus ride to Mundaka which is an absolutely beautiful little fishing village on the North coast, we arrived late Friday morning and we knew there was no surfing today so we headed straight for the campsite where we had booked a little chalet for the weekend. Friday was warm but damp and after a quick brew we took the 10 minute walk down the hill to the harbour to see where the surfing takes place. This place is tiny, beautiful but tiny and you can walk from one end of Mundaka to the other in a matter of minutes, there are a few little shops where you can buy most of your stuff as both of us are Veggie’s and there is only fish, fish or shell fish on the menu in the couple of restaurants here so it was a case of make your own dinner. There are plenty of bars everywhere and the people are all very friendly but English is not spoken so it can be hard work but Budweiser is the same in any language and the wife knew vino was wine so she was happy. Saturday was damp again but surfing was on and it was great to watch sitting on the harbour wall, even when the ASP finishes the free surfers go straight out so there is always something to watch even if like me you don’t surf yourself YET!
Andy Irons came out and I said Hi and got a picture and he happily spoke back but the thing that really amazed me was Slater, I took my copy of Pipe Dreams to get it signed but when he appeared it was unbelievable it was as though a famous movie star had just appeared and was handing out free money as everyone went bonkers and just surrounded him like nothing I had ever seen I got a picture of the side of his head from 20 feet away and that was about as close as I could get it was incredibly.
Anyway Sunday and Monday where basically the same apart from the temperature being in the 30’s which was lovely but I would highly recommend it to anyone and it cost us less to go there for 4 days than it did for 4 days in Newquay so don’t think it’s expensive cause it ain’t.
