Newquay not the centre for Surfing!!
Well as many people are aware, during the week of the Ripcurl boardmasters I had started to arrange an exhibition on surfing depicted by photography and visual media. After a great reply from people on the site and from newquay I had enough people to use as "models" for the shoots to produce the artwork that could be used for the exhibition and sold with a good donation to charity.
Update - After contacting almost all of the places in Newquay I could think off, I can safely say newquay doesnt seem bothered! From replys such as well we have to see if ti fits in with the ethos of our place!!! what its surfing!! to yes certainly that will be just under £15,000 for the week to hore the place I have decided to drop the exhibition When I have more intrest from galleries in London than from exhibition places in Newquay it really starts to annoy me .
Well thats enough from me, onwards and upwards. Just thought I would update you all on what was going on.
Cheers
Stew

Sorry to hear that Stewart.I thought as Newquay is supposed to be the Surf Capital of the UK.Places would have been fighting to let you hold the exhibition.

Its a shame Andy at Tunnel Vision still hasn't got his gallery above the shop that is now his surfboard emporium as I'm sure he would have been more than happy.

i wouldn't bother ANYWHERE in st ives - unless you do bloody watercolours they don't want to know my dads painting were "too contemporary" for there and in a place in newquay cos he wasn't a local they wouldn't show his work....i walked out saying "i wonder if they've heard the word discrimination before"..needless to say i won't be going back to THAT cafe
i think it's mighty unfair that newquay is hailing itself as "surfing centre for UK" but all it seems to get in the media for now is underage drinking and partying...anything surf related seems to take a backseat sadly.

I find it quiet simple these days, everything is money related, if I wanted to charge people 10 to come in, 5 for a glass of wine and keep all the money it would have been fine, however considering I have already spent out a fortune on this I decided to cut my losses and bin the exhibition, I have a few things in mind, but due to the general apperthy of newquay i doubt it would work so what is Newquays loss will no doubt by the plus for some advert in a magazine lol haha, that why i can still make my donation to a charity.

Not quite the same but why not have a show at the Boardmasters? I'm sure I saw one there last year and there's a bloody lot of people going through there.

sorry to hear your having trouble with your project dude, its a real shame when your trying to do a good thing and give to charity. im sure there must be somewhere that would accomodate you but like you say you cant sink endless amounts of money into it.
Have you thought about looking at other surfing towns, maybe brighton or even somewhere closer to newquay like polzeth?
The idea of a starnd at an event like boardmasters would probably work well, i bet the stand would cost a fair wack but maybe you could share with another artist or something to share the cost.
anyway good luck.

I looked at a stand at the boardmasters or well a tent lol and the cost compaired to what I was doing just didnt compair in price. I would have ended up almost £2000 down by the end of the week and as a business that is not something I would want to do especially when the idea is to make a good donation to charity.
Problems I have are anything I sell I have to pay tax on, yes I am donating my time to it but that in its self is taking me away from the other work. I looked at the hotels as well but seems as Newquay is now a building site and more and more of them are being knocked downa nd turned into flats it became impractical. The other idea I had was a surf lodge but then there is the security of the work at night from apres surf incidents and what lodge is going to except responsibility for work that would cost in the region of £6000 to replace for insurance costs and thats not even the sales price of the work. I think as it stands I would be better to do an on-line exhibition and just send out post cards haha!

couldn't you register yourself as a charity?? i know it sounds a bit stoopid but then surely you wouldn't have to pay tax on anything

Yes but then i have problems with what I produce for my business and what I produce for charity, its easier for me to donate to a charity for tax as well
