Get in touch with Stewart Plant who's on here as I'm sure he could help.

for real effective surf photography,

you either gonna need some very pricey waterproof housing, or a pricey lens like 600mm if you want to get some sharp shots from the beach,

But to be honest a 200mm would probably suffice and you could get some really nice shots.

What kit have you got atm???

well at the mo im using a canon 40D with a 18-200mm sigma for shooting off the pier. heres a couple shots i have gotten:

i have been looking at some splashproof (up to 10m) cases for my compact digi too so i may look at that first but if i could find a housing second hand for my eos 500 film cheapish then i may jump on that.

I know sod all about photography but love the shots. What pier would that be then as the water looks like East Coast.

For the ultimate in surf photography go to Oahu, Hawaii and check out Pipeline in winter. Lovelly blue water, huge and powerfull wave plus all the action is close to shore so you can get away without huge tele lens.

Check my shot with silly little old pocket camera. Quality is crap and waves were small but potential is there .

Your Canon D40 is a nice piece of kit and I'd like to upgrade my 400D with one like yours. I use mine for macro work, as I make living by making porcelain teeth - world away from surf photography.

Few years ago, there was guy from Italy in here who does surf phography for living. Visit link below to his profile page on this forum. Under 'About Me' tab, you will find link to his home page with examples of his work, and under 'Statistics' tab you can find his posts relating to his art.

Hope you find them usefull.
