Thumbs up Board Dilema

Hello there,
I have a dilema. I get down to cornwall 3-4 times per year and have previously had a couple of surf lessons and have hired the occasional mini-mal.

Someone I know through a friend is selling a board and bag.
I went to see the board tonight. Basically the board is a 6ft 10" short board, 19" wide and approx 2" thick. It's hardly been used. It has no dings and only has a little yellow wax on the top. Other than that it's in very good condition. It's a proper board, i.e. it's not a spongey board or moulded. It's got a thin wooden strip down the centre and has been 'Shaped' by someone. I can't remember the name of it though.

The guys got a travel bag with it too.

Basically, he's used it for approx one season and it's been sitting around in the bag, in his parents garage for 6-7 years.

He originally paid £250 ish for the board and £50 for the bag.

He only wants £100 or there abouts i.e. He's willing to negotiate, but basicallly wants to get rid of it asap, as he's getting hastled for the space. He basically went through a phase when he bought the board and isn't interested in surfing again.

Now for the Dilema..............

I don't have much experience and can basically stand up every so often and ride a small wave for a short time on a Mini-Mal.

The main problem is that I'm 6Ft 1" tall and nearly 17 stone. I'm not a fat bloke though. i.e I weight train regularly.

Is the board too small for me to continue learning on?

It seems like an absolute bargain.

What do you think?

CLIFFF!?!

Hehe, legend is back! Nice to hear from you again.

I think this is a great deal on the face of it, but I do feel that it is somewhat small for learning. Also, number of surfable days will be greatly reduced, as you will need clean and steep waves in order to be able to paddle into them.

On the other hand, check on eBay what package like this could be sold for keeping in mind that demand for surfboards will rise in summer months, as great many of us rediscover surfer within. You might be able to re-sell this for some profit.

Hey

Hey ivanmcp,
I have returned for the murkey depths of Urban life and will soon burst free of the rat race in search of the perfect wave!

I have been a little busy, which temporarily pushed surfing aside.

I now have a girlfriend and we've bought a house. Money has been tight over the last year, so I haven't made it down west for a while.

I still enjoy challenging my peg-on-face record . Although I haven't drunk that much cider in a while, so am yet to beat the record.

I'm due down west in late May for just over a week for my birthday. I'll grab a few surf lessons throughout the week and my Girlfriend found this surf board through a friend and thought it would be a great present.

It sounds like you're of the same opinion as myself. It's a great buy but is a little small for myself

I also thought of E-bay too. I talked to my girlfriend and I think she'd prefer to buy me something that I'd definetely keep. But then again, it might get me closer (Money) to buying a bigger board than I'd be if she didn't buy it for me.

I could always keep it for when I'm a little more advanced and just keep hiring mini-mals between surf lessons.

Or, I could let the girlfriend use it, even though she can't surf........... yet.

My last trip to cornwall, November 2003:

Hehe, for those who want to join in 'peg-on-face' challenge, this is what one has to beat:

http://www.surfnewquay.co.uk/forum/a...attachmentid=3

Your situation is similar to mine. Some years ago I went mad about surfing. I was known to drive to Newquay just for one day, start in the morning and return same evening, after 8-9 hours driving. This was costing too much money, as you can imagine, so I decided to take step back, in order to do two steps forward. In other words, do much less surfing, finish uni degree and get better job, which would then afford me property there to either live there full time or weekends. This I hope will give me more opportunity to surf.

Well, that is the plan, and so far it's on track. I should get my degree in May, I bought plot of land where I'd like to build something (only problem: it is not in Cornwall but Hawaii - see images below), and one outstanding thing is to find a decent job. All this is taking forever and we are not getting any younger.

Great to hear you are in relationship. I presume that is your girlfriend on your stalion!

Hi Cliff,

Nice phot of Praa, my local spot (live just over the hill), been rubbish lately though - flat.

Spent many a 3am challange diggin holes with the diggers in the sandpit next to the beachfield in Pz!

Very attractive girl too! (not being pervy, just a slight contrast to my 3am efforts)

On the Board front - hell, I'd get it, then let me know when your down next, might be looking for another (I'm 5'10 and 11 stone, ideal!)

Hope ya dont mind if I dont try the peg on face challenge though, thats gotta hurt.
