getting out of the way

Hi all,

I'm new to all this surfing so was wondering what you're supposed to do when you're in the shallows paddling out and then you're looking down the front of some guys board hurtling towards you???

I just left my board and dived under the wave trying to get a deep as possible!
There was no way he was going to get around me and no way he couldn't see me!
Much to my suprise my board survived unharmed!

Should he of bailed?

How could I of moved?

What do you think?

surf etiquette usually says that if you're on the wave you have right of way over someone who's not. if they hit you then they'll claim it was your fault for being in the way
just try to paddle around the breaking point of the wave so you're not going to be in someones way. go over the shoulder at a diagonal.
or just bail

what starfish said.

i usually stay within 6FT(being on bodyboard 'nall) but if you do get hit, its not always your fault, but dont get too worried of near misses, many sufers will come scarily close to show off that 'their great' on a board. if your addling out, try to go around the outside, or stay shallow until your confident
