Talking Newbies first season in newquay 2007!

Hey everyone!

Myself and a friend have made the decision to ditch in our responsible jobs early next year to head down to newquay for the whole summer. We're so excited about it but we don't know many people down there yet so thought this might be a good place to start.
I'm 27 (female) and only just started surfing this year so still pretty rubbish but i'm hooked already hence the decision to move down there for the summer. We're going down on the 1st March so would be great to know a couple of faces by that time.

hi and wlecome to the forum

if you want to work the summer (along with literally hundreds of other people) just rememer a few things and you'll do alright.

you've got to be reliable. as i already said tere are hundreds of others wanting the spots and temporary employment.

go early and setup pitch (but you've already said march so thats pretty early )

find the local haunts and make your face known. you might find it useful when summer prices kick in

good luck though. livig the dream is WAY cool and you wot regret it

Thanks for the tips mojo! We've already sorted our accomodation for the season (near quintrell downs) so we're just after jobs and trying to find some of those local haunts. I'm sure there's a post about that somewhere so i'll keep looking. We found on the rocks to be a great place to meet people over the summer so i guess we'll be spending some time in there.
Its great to find that there is so many other people in similar positions to us

Elementary my dear ...

Well I thought I'd get that one out the way

Welcome to the forum indeed ... arrrrr, fresh blood & a sensible age to boot instead of the usual chavs If you use the 'search' thread above with some key words you'll find the world is your lobster on here with most of what you need to know.

Just remember that NEWQUAY isn't the place it once was so watch yourselves at night in the height of the season ... the things happening in car parks & beaches were not good at some points & I felt my home town had gone down the drain some what.

QUINTRELL is lovely & just the right distance / place to get around too but with some peace & quiet when needed. Depending what you want to do check hotels / bars / hostels / shops etc. Plenty of places do advertise down there & the newsagents opposite the old coach station & FAT WILLYS SURF SHACK is a good place to start.

Most locals drink out of town but last year THE RED LION was ever popular as was the bar (forgotten the name at this ungodly hour) opposite NORTH SHORE going down towards TOWAN ... full of bloody Auss though in the height

TAD & NIKS is the internet cafe to be (lovely guy & known him since he first came to my town) & for boards & advice & all things surf ANDY at TUNNEL VISION & NICK at SUNSET SURF near the RED LION are also good but there is another recommended guy out of town who I can't remember !

Hope you'll stay & welcome ... we're a friendly bunch ...

Nice to meet you ancientwilliam!

I've spent quite a lot of time in newquay this year and had a great time. Is the bar you were thinking about Belushis because i have been in there a few times and there were loads of aussies in there?

Haven't been in the red lion for a few years if its the one i'm thinking of (near the harbour?) so will probably check that out on your recommendation next year.

I just bought my first board and wetsuit this year from tunnel vision and i think i did speak to Andy but it was Jay who we spoke to most, really friendly though. They were just in the process of sorting out snowboarding hardwear in there so i spent ages talking to them about that which was great as thats my other passion. Hopefully a season snowboarding will follow the summer in newquay.

It was BELUSHI's thats the one & the RED LION is the one on the mini roundabout by SUNSET SURF which you can see at the top of the harbour !!! Reason I say that is you also have THE FORT opposite SOMMERFIELDS which has a great harbour view.

Congrats on the purchase though, makes a change someone went to one of the 'better' places to get equiped instead of the tourist traps. I remember Andy mentioning something about snowboarding but I think I was concentrating on a cold beer at that point

i love the people in belushis, just not the bar staff!

i got flat refused a drink with a driving license ID, then i went and got my passport, he still said it was fake but he was going to serve me anyway? WHAT THE HELL ?

(thats pretty much what i meant about getting your face known) anyway, i had more right to be there than him... bloody aussies

Last time i was in Belushis the bar staff wouldn't serve me for about half an hour even though there wasn't anyone else waiting for a drink ! I figured it was because i wasn't one of the locals. They weren't very friendly at all. I can empathise with the Id thing though, I get ID'd whenever i go out and i'm 27!

I did a bit of asking around for the best place to buy my board in the summer and tunnel vision seemed far and away the best place around. They were happy to answer my hundreds of questions before i parted with my hard earned cash too which was a bonus.
