Info from the wise owls

Ok so im guna start by introducing myself... Im Natalie and i am indeed newww !!

Me and a large group of friends are coming all the way down to Newquay in summer (21st July til 28th) and i want some info on where to go and how to spend the week.

There are only 2 in the group who can surf (me aussie) Aussie is aka lauren but her nickname is aussie. So we are going to join forces and have some fun with the amateurs (the friends who cant surf)

So what are the best beaches to surf, and the best places to chill?

Thankoooo

Hi there & welcome to the forum.

You can do what we advise many & browse the forum as well as use the search facility of the forum to answer your questions. Also a GOOGLE or YAHOO on Newquay or similar wording like surfing in Newquay will hold many sites which will have what you seek.

At that time of year the surf can be small to non existant so be warned, but with great weather comes small swell. Plus your also depending on wind direction and the direction of the incoming swell this can all effect which beach will be the best for that hour, day or week! You can often find that if Fistral is supurb the bay is pants, but the next its the other way round! Your best looking at sites like :

www.magicseaweed.com

for regular updates.

As for chilling then it depends if you like wild nights of clubbing or actually taking it easy.
Newquay is full of bars & clubs that attract the usual 'chav' or twat types. Most of us locals go out of town & we guard our secret spots well to stop invasion of these types Again depending on where your staying they will recommend some places if its a surf lodge. Hotels may just direct you to the usual spots. A lot of students & surfer wannabe's will go to the Red Lion near the harbour but its still popular & Fistral Blu seems to be getting more popular even if you pay London prices for beer in there !!!

Hope that helps but use the search facilities as I said.

Hey and thanks!

A few are staying at the reef surf lodge.... a few are staying in carivans and another few are at another lodge i dont know the name of.
Im staying at the Reef surf lodge and have heard its near alot of bars/clubs, where not really looking to do the typical touristy thing, just to fit in and have fun.
And do you recommend any surf shops where we can rent boards cheap? Looking for long boards.

Also is Plymouth any good for surfing this time of year. Im down their this Thursday til Saturday and looking to pass some time on sat morning....

Thanks

just check out a surf forecast like www.magicseaweed.com to see what conditions are like..everywhere seems to be picking up a good swell at the minute but it looks to be dropping off later in the week.

Plymouth itself is a no no to be honest for surfing ...

Get the ferry across the TAMAR instead and head to the area of WHITSAND BAY along the SOUTH WEST COAST PATH roughly between CRAFTHOLE and RAME.

The walks down to the beaches can be slightly dodgy if not treacherous or long, especially near PREATHY. But good clean swells often come in there when the conditions are right.

Sunsets are spectacular too.

The sand along here is very nice and fine though, but only when dry (& your dry), but sheer bloody hell when your wet or its wet as it sticks to absolutely bloody everything & only a good shower can remove it !!!
