Anybody got any excercise routines for surfing?

I bought a book called 'Fit to Surf' for a read and was just wondering if many others do any form of physical excercise besides surfing?

I used to go to the gym 5 nights a week and run every night and now I do bog all and am so unfit, I desperatley need to get off my ass and get back into shape.

I should think Cheeky Monkey is probably the fittest on here thought.

What does the book say you should do?

We go to the gym twice a week and go swimming but could do with doing a bit more to be honest. really the best exersise is surfing.
Is that the surf / yogo book?

Like ya say surfing is a great workout, I was knackered Friday after 2 hours and the next morning my lats were killing me after paddling.

I will put up a more detailed list later for anyone interested in what excercises etc are described in the book.

Not a bad book, basically the same as other fitness/ excercise books but obviously is tailored towards helping the surfer.

Hi mate,

I'm a novice surfer, but I have always been into my exercise for martial arts etc and reckon that lats, chest, shouders and general cardiovascular work will be good for the surfer...

I would do what I call body-Vs-body training, i.e. no weights or training aids just using your body to train, i.e. press-ups, pull-ups, dips etc and swimming (for obvious reasons) and running...

Improve your overall fitness and staminer and your body will train itself stronger/fitter...

I'm doing a hard fitness session ahead visiting/surfing in Cornwall for 2 weeks in July!

Hope this helps,
Jeff

I totally agree with you with the body vs body principle, especially so when it is for pure health / fitness reasons.

While at work the other day I was struck with a thought of a new way to train that is not body vs body, weight training or isometrics, I am going to do some more research on this, use my own principles and see if I can protect my ideas with a view to maybe writing a book........day dreaming again......

Seems like a totally original idea to me, so, who knows?

Sorry if I went off on a tangent there

Not at all fella, it's the dreamers that are the creators and inovators of the world!

I am a big thinker, I always try to come up with new ways and means of doing daily things etc to make life easier, more enjoyable and rewarding... Follow the idea through mate, YOU NEVER KNOW, there's BIG money in health and fitness these days...

Use the forums search facility as this has been discussed to death before.

Remember to stretch ... the more flexible you are the less possible injury.
Swimming is the best exercise as it covers the areas you'll use.

Surf Fitness?

This is the only one I could find.

The thing I seem to have to work on is holding my breath and stop getting hit by the board!

I may be an 'excellent' personal trainer and therapist ... even if i do say so myself ...
but when it comes to surfing I'm agreeing with the quote above - hold n duck!!!

You guys have pretty much covered it.
AW is right swimming is great.
Interval sessions mixed with plyometric exercises and core training would be perfect.

Have fun with it - it doesn't have to be a chore
