noob board advice

I am looking to purchase my first board but I'd quite like to ask some advice from the guys and girls on here first. Ive been surfing on rented boards quite a bit after my first lesson two years ago and feel like I am of a decent enough ability to buy my own instead of renting as then I can surf at my local beach instead of waiting and hoping that the family goes on holiday to somewhere with surf (and a rental place!). I am in a bit of a predicament though, I am around 6 foot 4 and just under 110kgs which may sound like I am a fat slob but the height evens it out a little, im not going to say its all muscle though ha. I was just wondering what type of board I should go for? Iv done some research and all that comes up is boards for people under 80-90kilos
any help would be much appreciated

cheers

now im no expert but as your ob quite a big guy and taking into account your an east coaster like myself so may have to make do with smaller surf ....id recommend some thing along the lines of a 7.6 - 7.10 mini mal.Bigger board for a tall guy and good for east coast conditions.Whats your break?? Maybe if theres a surf shop nearby they should also be able to advise you.I d also say dont go just for a make, a board suited to you is v important, and it pays to get one to meet the conditions youre gonna be generally meeting.

By the way,im 5.10 and 13st 10 (solid of course) and i use a 7.10 minimal, very buoyant and good in weaker waves.

happy hunting

You haven't really said how good you are but the basic rule is the longer, thicker and wider the board the easier it is to get up on and that is what is all about. The more waves you can catch the quicker you progress so don't think you have to buy a short board or anything just because you see others with them. My misses is on 5' 3" and the bloke she spoke to in the shop the other day said go for an 8' and have fun rather than go for something smaller and get frustrated. Beginner boards are easy to sell when you progress. As K said if you can find a good shop they will point you in the right direction.

Have fun.

like what was said above really the bigger the better as you are getting more foam in the length. I ride a 9.1 longboard and with a 7inch centre fin and 2 fcs side fins you get the buoyancy of a longboard and when your up you have the performance of a shorter board.

Hi there,

I was in the same situation as you, hired a board for 2 weeks whilst down in Newquay and absolutley loved it. I had never been surfing before so I had no idea what to buy, I did find a great article about buying your first surfboard here. which was very helpful.

In the end I decieded to go for a 6' 6" second hand custom board by Mellow Marshyellow. I have been out a few times at my local beach in N.Wales and It absolutely rocks!

The board is nice and thick and floats me perfectly, it also catches waves like a dream!

Good luck finding your new board

Summerwoo!
