My Learning Experience (Great Western Beach)

Just been for to Newquay for the weekend decided to learn to Surf kinda last minute on Saturday. Turned up at 2:00pm with a mate to find that there was a session at 2:15. No prior booking just Jumped for a 2hr session for £25 Quid each.

The one downside is that me and my friend got stuck in a group of about 20 women who were on a Hen weekend. DAMN!

All the kit was provided (wetsuit and board) and this place had quite literally the largest changing room in the world. The 2 Hr lesson started with the standard safety guidelines, a warm-up, group photos, several jokes and an introduction on how to actually catch a wave we were in the water with the instructors at our side for any guidance. (It was a pretty simple method and suffice to say we got the hang of it quickly)

After a good 20-30 minutes practise we were back on the beach for pats on the back, more jokes and step 2 of how to surf (standing up). After several runs through the technique we were back in the water for more practise again with the instructors close enough for tips. Again me and my mate found this pretty simple to grasp and hey I figure we needed to be good in front of 20 women.

After the session was over we all had a good chat about the day and the best group hug I have ever had. So began the long haul up the beach to get changed. (The tide really can go quite far out in 2 hours)...

It turns out that we also had a few photos taken when we got back by a professional photographer. (he had either a Canon 30D or 40D for anyone who cares) Luckily I had my own photographer/Mrs taking shots on my SLR so we didn't need to buy any but they were there at a decent price.

After that experience day 2 of our holiday was decided immediately. go surfing. we had heard about a place called Fistral beach of a friend who had been to Newquay before. I was not in the mood to go looking for beaches I knew where i wanted to be and what I wanted to be doing.

But anyway we set off for Fistral with me mumbling "there better be surfing" all the way there.

Oh there was surfing alright.

Turns out this Fistral beach is quite big. After hiring some ripped wetsuits and boards from one damn rude lady we set off to the surf to find out the bigger the wave the harder it its to stand up. It was an incredible day. I've never spent 6 straight hours in the sea before. I caught the Surfing tuition there whilst i was practising on my own and although I don’t have a 1st hand experience. it looked like the tuition was quite messy with people just doing random things to try and get on a board. Offer nearly 3 hours most f the people hadn't come along half as much as we had with the Tuition on great western.

To sum up.
Great Western Beach was a great learner beach with excellent tuition and the waves seemed just right to build our confidence to tackle the waves at Fistral.

I really would recommend having a tuition at Great Western until you are comfortable with the technique. Then go to Fistral to try out your skills.

One thing about Fistral is that I wouldn’t rent any gear there. The woman at the counter was damn rude, we hired damaged wetsuits. Mine was ripped in the neck and every time I went under the cold water would get in (what was the point of the suit?) and maybe it was just me or the sea but it seemed a lot harder to balance the boards and stop them rocking me off. I don’t know if I can blame the board for that but everything else there was naff so I’m going to. Maybe it was just heavily used but I’m a stickler for quality.

I uploaded my Photos of the day if anyone cares to have a look.

Thumbs up

Hi Deap

Thanks for an excellent write up.You are right to say that it is easier to learn to surf at Great Western,as it is more sheltered than Fistral.

And its great to see you have caught the surfing bug.

And thanks for sharing the photos, they are really good.Dont forget to join the Sufnewquay Facebook page.

Hiya Deap.

Nice wright up mate and good photos. I see from them that the surf school was Reef. I learnt to surf with them a few years ago and I thought they were brilliant. The equipment we had was brand new and there were 3 or 4 instructors helping you out. The guy in charge (an Ozzy that looked like your stereotypical surfer!!!) was very enthusiastic and very helpful. The only problem was the walk up the hill at the end after 2 hours of surfing!!!

I think I know the lady you are talking about at Fistral!! Very rude!! I tried to rent a board off her (a foam one like the Reef boards) and she point blank refused!! No idea why!! There were others out there with them, it wasn't too windy, wasn't too crowded, no rips that I was told about (I asked a life guard). Perhaps she just didn't like me!!! I didn't hire a wetsuit as I had decised to buy my own. I bought it from Fistral Surf Company opposite the station for about 80 quid in the sale.

I hope you carry on enjoying the surfing. Once you start you can't get rid of the bug!!!

Thanks for responding to my comments, I was expecting to get ripped by locals and regulars for commenting on that woman at Fistral Beach's attitude but hey I guess since I have some agreement its just part of the experience we can share.

I'm after some advice now I posted on the Buy/Sell forum but I guess that's just for ad's only.

I want to buy my own wetsuit as I am going back down for august bank holiday weekend. I really like the look of the shorties however I'm concerned as I saw a few people walking round with large patches of skin missing from their chest and stomach which I assume is from not wearing a wetsuit/rash vest.

Would my arms and legs be at risk in any way, wearing shorties? I just don't see many people wearing them.

Any other wetsuit advice would be nice too I searched the forums but couldn't find any "what to look out for pages" ect.

Are there general guidelines I should stick too? like what size to look for, brands ect?

As mentioned I bought my suit from FSC. The guys in there were really helpful with advising what sort to go for, how thick and price. Have a look when you get down there and see if there are any sales on.

I have a body glove suit, full length 5mm suit (I think!!). I have always thought that the water is a bit too cold for shorties, even in the summer. It might be warm on land but the Atlantic is a different matter!! I sometimes find that my suit is a bit too warm so maybe a 3mm suit would suit you, no pun intended!!

Not sure why you are seeing people with skin missing!!

Hope this helps

Hi Guys

Deap it's really good to read your review of the surf school you used. There are so many to choose from but hearing a first hand recommendation is good for us first timers.

Just one quick question I wanted to ask you guys, since you seem to know your stuff, Im prob going to be coming down on my own, as a complete novice, and just wondered if there're many people who go solo. From what ive read you can get packages with accom etc. included so I figure if you just head for one of these you're gona meet people right? Also im only gona be able to make it down in october, so don't wana get all the way down there (from manchester) and find out there's no-one to meet. What do you reckon?

I did not see any individuals on the lesson I had. I've just gotten back from another long weekend down there and there were a few people on Fistral who seemed to be going at it solo.

Most people are friendly enough to chat to as the boards are easily recognisable as they differ in style depending on what levels you use.

Beginners all seem to have the standard foam yellow board so you can normally have a laugh with people on the same style board as you. Most conversation extends to "Sorry" or "Ahhhhhhhhhhh, Look out!" however.

I still love Surfing and have come back with a lot more injuries this time. I wish I was still in the sea

Im back and well and truelly hooked !

Well if anyones interested...lol, im back and had a fantastic week ! made some good friends and had three great days of surf, each day bigger than the last which was just right for my learning curve ! I cant rate reef surf school highly enough, the guys are really friendly and really know their stuff. looking at getting back down in october for more of the same, only thing i will say is both reef island and reef lodge had no bars open or food available. its somewhere clean to sleep and maybe meet up with people. no more than that...cant knock it for the price tho.

Wow I haven't popped back to this forum in ages and it is nice to see that people care about my feedback.

I normally have fad's in my life where I pick up an activity and follow it through until I'm bored. Like playing the guitar or staying with one woman....

I can't wait to get back to Newquay. It was such a good experience, my mate loved it so much he has just bought a motor home, now Im back on the Surfing train, Need to get my own board......

I think I might live in Newquay this year. I already have about 5 trips planned, 1st is in April over Easter.

How is the weather normally that early in the year?
