Any Surf Tips?

Hi Guys,

I have had 2 surfing lessons before with Errant Surf (which I would recomend to anyone wanting to learn!) Anyway I live no where near the sea and I am determined to learn to surf this year, We are going to Newquay for 2 weeks in the summer but I wondered if there was any techniques that I can practice back where I live? I know you can buy things that help with balance and things but I just wondered if there was any ideas on how to improve surfing techniques in the comfort of my own home!

Thanks
Annie

Lie on a plank between two chairs & practice 'popping' onto your feet in one?

Balance on the arm of lounge chair?

Seriously though apart from the items like a surf ball or balance board there isn't much apart from various exercises you can do at home!

Have a look here & see if any of these exercises might help on this site :

Ah brilliant thank you! I know its really difficult to learn at home but when ever I go out at sea I seem to forget everything so I thought if I could "Practice" I will hopefully get better!

spend a while in your local pool, front crawl is helpful but quite as good as actually paddling on a board, slightly different muscles. get your gym to give you some core and arm exercises for dragging a board about in whitewater too it can be really tiring, the stronger your muscles and attachments are the longer you'll last! have fun!

Always paddle with the crawl stroke one arm and then the other alternatively the reason for doing is that this will provide you with a constant speed so you can catch that wave. You must be careful for too much weight in the back and the board will cork the board. This is a common mistake amongst beginners. You cannot catch a wave if you are corking your board. Move up an inch at a time till the board lies in the water naturally. This will provide you with the maximum hull speed and minimum drag from the water displacement that you are causing with your weight.
