I'm in the same boat here, I want to own a board so I don't have to pay every time I go in the water. I have only ever used foamies and can easily get up one one of them, I really want to move up a class but don't even know where to begin.

Does anyone know of an online resource with a decent guide or any advice from anyone's personal experience buying their 1st board.

A lot will depend on your ability, height, weight ,location etc.A good board i found was a mini mal, buoyant and able to catch mush if youre in a not so desirable break with weaker smaller waves.Theres advice aplenty on this forum, just use the search option and happy hunting

Tiki Surfboard for a beginner?

Hi there i was just wondering if a Tiki 7ft 6 fatboy surfboard would be a good first time shortboard for me?im learning on my friends mini-mal at the moment and i want to buy my own surfboard and practice and get used to one board!i am 5 ft 11 and i weigh 12 stone & 2 pounds and getting heavier.

here is the info on the board:
Length: 7'6 ft
Width: 21 1/4
Thickness: 2 7/8

i want to surf alot and i am going to newquay in the summer and i want to be able to surf decently by then! i dont want to buy a rubbish board and then have to move on and buy another board, so would this board be good for me?take in account that ive had a couple of lessons on my friends mini mal which is 7ft 4, so is this board ok for me?

for any learners out there...

i'd go for something around 9ft!! pick up a second hand longboard. you'll catch more waves and be able to perfect your technique on smaller waves,

otherwise, if you really don't want to go big, get a minimal around 8ft

bigger is best when starting out... buying and selling second hand means you don't lose too much money each time (if at all)

spend more once you know you really will get use out of your board.

support UK brands and shapers - you get a lot more for your £

I agree, go 8ft at least and you'll catch everything in sight!
