Thumbs up

Allthough i never stay at Watergate,When i am down at Newquay,i allways make a point of visiting Watergate for a surfing day.As sometimes the surf is better at Watergate than Fistral. There is also a nice coastal path to go along to Watergate if you do not want to drive there.Have a look at the web cam shots of the bay,its kewl.So Watergate gets the thumbs up from me.

Low tide on a small summer swell, classic!

Go at low tide & keep walking till you find an empty wave,

good food (nice hot chocolate), good campsite at the top of the hill,

convienent for all the beaches up the coast towards Polzeath/Padstow

loads to do if there's no surf (X-Academy)

Watergate rules!

i visit watergate bay for 2 weeks every year to co-inside with the Boardmasters in newquay and love the beach. i think the main reasons are lack of tourists and wanna go surfers combined with a reasonable surf. the beach is allways clean parking cheap and close.

well since the summer my craze for it all has taken over - i'm not a tourist anymore - i now live in cornwall - ha ha - been to watergate 4 times this week (feb 2004) wow winter surfing is amazing - nice big clean waves free parking and a winter wetsuit - apart from it feeling like sticking your head in a bucket of cold tap water when you wipeout - and winter sunsets wow - and hot chocolate from the cafe - i love it !!

Have to say Watergate is my favourite beach in the Newquay area, it gets great swell and is more chilled out than Fistral. Definitely the place to be at high tide.
Bloody easy to get to from the Smuggler's Haven as well!

Watergate is good!!

I think Watergate is a fantastic beach...because you can always find a lonely spot, except in high season when the surf schools take over!!! But I'll be back down next week and I'll probably be spending most of my time there...swell allowing (and my secret spot of course...but you lot can find your own....)!!! Fistral has a nice break and I got to surf near dolphins last autumn (not as good as Krige...but close!!!) but as a package Watergate wins. I agree the hot chocolate is good and they do a mean bacon sarnie too!!!!!
