My summer beach, if Fistral is good, Crantock will be good (suffers a bit from adverse wind directions)

one of the few places near Newquay that works well at high tide (watch for the rip at the river mouth!)

not normally many people in the water (a bit of a 'secret spot', but the secret is that there is very limited parking!)

crantock is great long board wave park at the top of headland walk down the cliff jump in and there you are right in the line up last surf there in the summer very heavey and big barrels no good that time on a big board loads of short boards getting stoked
when its good its good when its its not so good its not worth the effort getting to it

I learned to catch waves at Crantock, firstly on a bodyboard then a surfboard, and i love the place! never as packed as Fistral even on very hot days.

Also if you ever wanna have a break from the water there's some awesome dunes to jump!

I spent 2 weeks a year, every year, till I was 12 or 13 with my family at Travella Park and Crantock Beach is where I learnt to body board at about age 5. So it will always have a special place in my heart....and more than that its a bloody nice beach. The break is good on good days, but crappy when its a bit messy. There can be a vicious rip but you soon get used to it.... The best break is off the rocks at the headland and then straight across the mouth of the river.
The secret to parking by the way is to go up to either Treago Farm campsite or to porth joke and walk along the headland.....its free and theres always space!!!

On most beaches there is board hire, but it depends on what you want. Beach hire usually consists of softfoam (Walls!) huge longboards. To hire something more shorter/faster, you will have to go to one of the many shops in town. There are tons to choose from. The price...I haven't got a clue....sorry

Surf shops

Check the 'Surf Shops' link on this site, plenty to choose from.

One of the people I was down with last time hired a board from a shop that I can't remember the name of! I do know it's opposite FSC (otherside of a mini roundabout) at the top of the hill. Huge selection of boards and the staff know what they're on about.

Before moving to Pentire I use to use CRANTOCK all the time & like someone said before I learn't to bodyboard & surf here.

The only thing I never liked was the fact that if you accidentally swallowed any water here you were always ill but that had something to do with an outlet somewhere around there for rainwater or treated sewage.

There is some excellent surfing to be done here & I'll never forget my father having his worst wipeout here either ! He'd just come off his board after some overbalance on the downwardf section & found his feet again so stood up in a depth of water which came up to about his chest height.

Then loads of those infront of him pointed behind him & shouted just as he turned slowly (it was very Hollywood) around & his sight was greeted by a steep glassy bank of water rushing towards him which before he had chance then dumped itself unceremoniously on him as the wave broke

I nearly drowned laughing as he & board was washed up near enough on the beach & the following site of him throwing hunks of sand off, his boards & scooped out his torn wetsuit was enough to have even the concerned lifeguards trying not to smile too much

To this day he still has the scars from the sand rash

firing blanks

though crantock is a sick wave, the source of the gannel is an abandoned lead mine,
meaning surfing there continuously for more than a couple of years means you will go sterile, happened to me.lol
