I have never been to Porth Beach, always seemed to drive past it. I will be tryin it this year as it seems a good family beach, and I need to cater for my son now also.

Can anyone vouch for it? And is there the occasional surf to be had here?

Far better as a family beach than a surfing beach. Best surf to be had near low tide when the bay is at its narrowest. Great beach to explore at low tide with your son too, sorry to make you choose.
