this is one of the places we will definately visit in the next few weeks when we're in cornwall.

we're all quite happy to just go there for scenery etc. but would all like to surf it. someone told me the currents are the strongest in devon & cornwall. i'm a fairly good swimmer and so are the ppl i will be with. is it recommended for beginner/intermediate surfers and bodyboarders? and exactly how strong are the currents?!

Not sure wot t currents are like at Bedruthen but I wouldn't recomend surfin there if ur a beginner 4 t fact that theres no lifegaurds

Betta stikin 2 t mainstreem until u get proficient...currents n rips can b both frightenin n dangerous...I kno...I've had my share of em

Cant take it away from t beauty of t place tho

Bedruthans a good beach but i wouldn't reccomend surfing there because of the sharp rocks and the countless 'do not enter the sea' signs. I've even seen a few memorials to people who have died there!

A strange day at Bedruthan

On the day of the boscastle flood, I was down in cornwall on holiday, and as fate would have it, I was in the car with the family on the way to...you've guessed it: Boscastle!

It had been an ok-ish holiday; not as good as previous years as we had stayed in a different hotel at a bay with very few other people my age....ok bodyboarding but relatively dull being stuck with the relatives all the time, and nothing to do in the evenings. Anyway, we had managed to set off late and subsequently took a wrong turn ...we ended up very close to the Bedruthan Steps, and as we'd been there in the past, we thought we'd visit it for old times sake.

Un-benknown to us, whilst we were walking along Bedruthan beach in glorious warm sunshine with a beautiful sea in front of us, boscastle was suffering under torrential rain...then behind me I heard 'Oi! Oi!'. Who comes running towards us but the family we meet up with every year at our usual hotel- we had no idea they would even be in cornwall at the same time as us, let alone be on the same beach on almost the last day of our holiday. As fate would have it, they too had been heading for boscastle, taken a wrong turning and ended up climing down to Bedruthan beach (as they had remembered how we had said what a wonderful place it was the year before)!

Of course, it was probably nothing more than a funny coincidence, but as my dad is disabled, had we made it to boscastle, he would have been stuck in the car (as he is relatively immobile), possibly resulting in him being swept out to sea with the other vehichles. He jokes about how he could have had a moment on 'seaside rescue', but it really is not very funny- that gorgeous day could have been very, very different!

This is why I love the Bedruthan steps!
