Well....glad you brought that one up Dave. Ivan promised us ages ago that he was gonna post the details of how to go about this. I have just read Nat's Nat (biography by Nat Young) who designed, shaped and made board for years, which had me wonering what Ivan was doing about it.

Well................over to you Ivan.................we're itchin to get started

The coffee table would only be good as a bodyboard, maybe the ironingboard might be a better option!

Hey all,

This is my first post after some time. I am working on another project, which is almost complete. Once done, lots of things learned from that will be employed on SurfNewquay site.

Board building article of my attempt to make one is still on the cards, and I have not forgotten it. Only problem is that I want to gather as much info and pictures as I can. To make a board is not easy by any means. It is hard to get any info on how to do it, let alone actually doing it. Shaping the blank is fairly easy. Glassing the bugger is another matter. Not to mention sanding them down, without going through to the bare foam . Fins like FCS are easy with good preparation, and final gloss coat is no problem.

You have to be prepared for a fair ammount of trial and error. And if you screw up - like I did with glassing my third board, as I got cocky thinking it was too easy , you have to be prepared to start all over, sometimes meaning you'll have to get another blank etc.

But it is very satisfying experience, and feels worth every penny afterwords. Strutting down the Fistral beach with my own board, shaped, glassed, sanded and polished by my own hand makes all the hassle worthy. Oh, and even getting hit by it in the mush does not hurt .

Worthy links! Hey, how about I set up 'Links' page, so everyone can submit links about surfing and get involved.

If people are interested (I need two votes ), I'll set it up.

Cough, ermmm, I actually did some work in secret, so check it out:

http://www.surfnewquay.co.uk/links/

I just need to add some surf categories in there, like History, Associations, Environmental, Lady links, shapers, clothes, travel blah blah blah.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cool, I have two votes needed to pass the 'Linkeage' proposal. I am requesting few days (read: few months ) to complete it.

All I need from you is to submit your favourite links - surf related of course, once I set the page up - by sunday I hope.

Blanks

You could also try this site. www.clarkfoam.com They sell blanks, but not sure wether they sell them as a single unit. The prices seem to be for a batch of 4.

Clarke Foam is what I used in my projects. You can buy blanks from Seabase in Newquay (minimum quantity is 1 ), and everything else that you might need for your DIY board building excercise.

http://www.seabase.ltd.uk/

I had great experience in dealing with them, and they even took me to their factory to see the processes involved in making boards, and get all the advice I needed.

Infact, they sell three complete kits (from shortboard to longboard), and they include:

#########################################

Seabase Surfboard Kit - the original and still the best!

If you are starting out, why not try one of our famous Seabase Surfboard Kits? They contain all the materials needed to make a surfboard. We also include full instructions on how to make your surfboard.

Each Seabase Surfboard Kit includes the following:

1st Quality Clark Foam Blank
Hexel Fabrics Fibreglass in 4oz or 6oz - you choose
ISO 7x Laminating Resin (4kg or 5kg depending on the blank)
Taupo Gloss Resin (1.2kg) - optional
100 ml Catalyst / Hardener
125 ml Wax in Styrene (for sanding / hot coats)
1 Deck / Leash Plug
Choice of Fin Systems & Fins (Euro Fins / FCS, Futures Fins, Speeedfins, Glass On Fins, and more)
Clark Foam decals
Seabase - 'Making a Surfboard' instructional leaflet
Next day delivery*
Those are all the materials you'll need to make a surfboard.

#######################################

Hehe, great stuff. Now, you just need to find a place where to attempt this build. I did mine in my spare bedroom, but I must admit - that was daft. Still, it produced some great results .

But I also uncovered the ugly side of board buisiness. Surfers Paradise shop would tell me that they owned their own board factory. I then go to Seabase later on the same day, just to find out that Seabase makes boards for many shops. I dont mind this, but why lie. Also, lots of shops will tell you that they imported board from, say USA, when it has been made localy by somebody. Grrrrrrrr .

In other words, you want to buy Rusty surboard, thinking it is made by the great man himself over in the States. Or Hawaiian Island Creations board. Think again....
