JOSS BAY KENT - anyone been there?

Hello friends and associates!

I have just returned to my East London home from a thoroughly rewarding 2 weeks in Cornwall where much learning to surf took place.

After last years board-hiring antics I decided to buy a board this time round, a 7' 6" mini-mal to be precise...

Anyhow, I'll spare you any more waffle and cut to the chase...

My nearest bit of surf back here at home is Joss Bay in Kent, and I wondered if any of you have surfed there before..? I have checked out various websites for the area and it looks ok so I am planning a trip for a few weeks time...

The plan is to get better at surfing here ready for when the wife, son and I finally move to Cornwall in 18 months time!

Look forward to hearing any news...

Cheers,
Jeff

Glad to hear you had a nice time.

I've not been there but just had a look in my copy of Stormrider and for Joss Bay it says.

"Gives beach break peaks mainly in big Nwinter swells. Tides from incoming mid to high are preferable."

Here's a link as well. http://www.surfnewquay.co.uk/forum/a...hp/t-1731.html

Plus there is a Joss Bay website, did you see that?

Good Luck and keep us up to date with your adventures.

I've heard about JOSS BAY but never been, was once informed there was some typical territorial surfer types there ...

That was until he returned the following week with his workmates ... all doormen

Hopefully things have changed but I did here its more for the longboard or mini-mal fraternity.

WELCOME TO JOSS BAY

Cheers for the info guys,

With Joss Bay being a Longie/mini-mal wave I of course had that in mind when I got the board... ideal to learn, I think...

Thanks for the link to Magic Seaweed, the site looks great but for one thing... How the hell do you read/understand the info...???

Today it is...

Swell

2ft @ 6secs

Wind

14mph

Now, how does one interpret that info...??????

Thanks,
Jeff

It can be a bit confussing to start and I am only just getting a bit of an idea myself. It's probably the easiest to read but it's not always that accurate so if Joss Bay has a local shop it's worth calling it for a forecast before you set out.

Don't get your swell height mixed up with wave height, you can roughly half the swell height to give you some idea of the wave size.

Wind direction is easy enough, it's telling you which way the wind is blowing and how hard. Remember Offshore GOOD, On shore BAD. You will need to know which direction best gives you surf at Joss Bay.

And period is the difference in seconds between the peak of one wave in the set and the next and you want to be looking for something above 6 really to give you anything.

Swell Stars are always a dead give away though, more shaded stars the better the surf.

I hope this helps and if I've got anything wrong I'm sure one of the kind peeps on here will be happy to put me right.
