Surfing Southern Cal spots 'perfect' - Houston Chronicle

'Old Coast Highway 101 — called "the 101" by the locals — is the classic surf route of Southern California. The highway passes all the towns and many of the established breaks along that storied coastline.
And Jeff Duclos and I make a 101 pilgrimage each summer. Duclos, of Hermosa Beach, Calif., is one of my oldest surfing companions. We each began surfing during the early 1960s, and met at a Dewey Weber longboard revival contest during the summer of 1982. Our friendship grew following several surfing trips with the late Weber.
During subsequent years, the sandy tracks of the (self-proclaimed) "Dynamic Duo" wandered from Mexico and Costa Rica to the far-off reef breaks of Fiji, but the core experience remains the 101...'
