Surf's not up for Newquay as reef plan flops

Surf's not up for Newquay as reef plan flops
Guardian Unlimited
'Protest by rowers and fishermen forces shelving of artificial barrier.
Newquay on an overcast summer's day. A stag party in search of a hangover cure hires surfboards and trots down to the chilly water. They enjoy their splash around but the waves are not strong enough to provide real thrills and they are soon back on the beach, towelling themselves down before heading for the pub to warm up.
The resort in north Cornwall styles itself the UK's surf capital but the waves are often disappointing and when they are good the sea can be packed.
So the idea of building an artificial reef off one of the town's beaches seemed an ideal solution. A reef would, it was hoped, create more and better waves, possibly the best in Europe.
But Newquay's artificial reef seems dead in the water today after a groundswell of opposition from the local rowing club and fishermen who are stridently against tampering with nature's ebb and flow...'

Maybe everyone should boycott the fishmongers, fish and chip shops and fish dishes in the hotels.

I'm sure he'd soon learn the value of visiting surfers and their expenditure then.

People like Mr Trebilcock must remember about the money that people like myself spend down in Newquay.I have being going down to Newquay since 1975.And i dread to think how much money i have spent altogether in that time. And if it was not for people like us going down to Newquay and spending our hard earned money.Alot of things that Newquay have, they would not have if people stopped visiting Newquay.

Will the tourist trade in Newquay die a death, when the reef in Bourmouth is built?.I think it might as the Bourmouth council wants the surfers trade.

As the C.E.O of Barracuda Surfwear.I would now condsider opening a shop up in Bourmouth rather than Newquay. Is that what the powers that be really want?.

Just my thoughts.

I love Newquay with a vengence. I must do to return, year after year, but I keep coming back for the sea and surfing, and if the culture relocates, then I may have to, too. Restormel Council must realize that it is the surf culture which attracts all their business, and if that goes, then all that will be left will be the Idiots thet refuse to go to Ibiza!!

Mr Trebilcock should be more bothered about the drunken gangs who were in their 20's wandering around the town centre looking for fights.Newquay centre at night was like a war zone.

Thankfully i know the back route to S.O.H's house,so i can avoid the town centre.

Mr Trebilcock probably IS one of the 20 year old guys wandering round looking for a fight and that's why he isn't complaining about it.

Last summer's troubles, nearley put my youngest through MaxOut's shop window, and it was the police chasing the idiots that were the cause. I try to avoid the town when its really packe, and never on a Saturday night when all the new-blood arrives. will let you know how it goes this year!!

pertition

maybe the only way forward is to start a large pertition and make the council realise the amount of money they would lose if tourists started going else where!!!!
Besides Bournmouth doesnt have the same ring as NEWQUAY.
COME ON PEOPLE POWER and all that

i know this thread is a bit old now.

even if bournemouth did get an artifical reef and started to get some wicked waves, i would still pick newquay. the waves are fine, maybe not as constitant as they could be but its newquay! its just the whole feel and atmosphere you get from being there.

newquay is and will be the place to be for a good while yet.

any more news on the reef though?
