Mundaka Mourns Loss of Perfect Wave as Surf Contest Is Canceled

'Mundaka, a northern Spanish coastal village christened "The Queen of Europe'' by surfers, is mourning the loss of its wave.
Mundaka's five-meter-high (16 feet) swell isn't breaking, prompting the Association of Surfing Professionals to call off a competition this month in the town of 1,900 people. Surfers canceled their trips, leaving the village without 10,000 spectators and with 90 percent of hotel rooms empty.
"The wave gave life to Mundaka and without it the village is like any other place on the Basque coast,'' said Hotel Mundaka Manager Marco Giannotti, 35, in an interview...'
