Mexican wave wins its own fans

'Celebrated Victorian thrill-seeker Ross Clarke-Jones is within touching distance of extreme surfing's greatest prize, the Billabong XXL award for the biggest wave of the year.
Clarke-Jones, who lives in Torquay, caught the monster wave estimated at between 18.3 and 21.3 metres in Mexico last December.
The nominations, as chosen by a panel of eight experts, were announced at the weekend for the award worth more than $US60,000 ($A84,000).
US-based Billabong XXL event director Bill Sharp said Clarke-Jones' gigantic wave as "one of the greatest waves ever ridden"...'
