'Surfers claim Britain’s first artificial reef has become a £3million white elephant because it creates the wrong sort of wave.
The reef, built from huge bags of sand, opened last November, 12 months late and £1.3million over budget.
The only one of its kind in the northern hemisphere, the reef off Boscombe, Dorset, was supposed to transform the resort into a surfers’ paradise by turning small waves into 10ft breakers. But those who have surfed there are not impressed.
They say the waves are too steep and break too quickly.
Safety fears have also been expressed because the reef is too near the surface at low tide, which has resulted in fins being ripped off boards...'
