Waimea Bay, North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii The sport of surfing was very popular even centuries ago, with the early Hawaiians taking to Waimea's huge waves on their long boards. When Captain Cook's ships sailed into Waimea to collect water in 1779, shortly after Cook's death on the Big Island, an entry in the ship's log noted that the valley was uncommonly beautifull and picturesque. Sure is.
